Browser MMO Urban Dead to Bid Farewell After Two Decades

Urban Dead, an iconic browser-based MMO, will cease operations this week after an impressive run of nearly 20 years.

Urban Dead, a pioneering browser MMO that has been a staple for nearly 20 years, is shutting down this week, specifically on March 14 at noon UTC. The game, set in the fictional city of Malton, let players choose between survivors and zombies, with gameplay unfolding in real time. Players received one action every 30 minutes, encouraging communal strategies and social interaction.

“No grand finale. No final catastrophe. No helicopter evac. Make your peace or your final stand.” (Translation: The game will end without a significant event; players are encouraged to reflect on their experiences or continue fighting.)

Despite the absence of recent updates, a loyal faction of players has continued to keep the game’s community alive in the lead-up to its closure. The shutdown follows the implementation of the UK’s Online Safety Act, which poses significant legal challenges for small web projects.

Creator Kevan Davis expressed regret over the closure, highlighting that operational viability under the new regulations is unattainable for Urban Dead.

As the community prepares for the end, many veteran players are reuniting to share memories, strategies, and farewells in various online platforms, including Discord, marking the end of an era for this beloved title.
