When searching for the dimensions of Elden Ring’s map, the figure of 79 km² is commonly cited. However, this statistic originated from a Reddit post by user Lusty-Batch who claimed to have calculated the map’s size while under the influence of edibles, using his horse and a bridge as reference points.
Despite the innovative approach, this estimate has muddied the waters of gaming geography. Thankfully, YouTuber Addypalooza has provided a more precise analysis of Elden Ring’s map size. In his video, he raises two significant points against the 79 km² figure:
- Water Areas: The original measurement includes vast regions of impassable water.
- Playable Space: A measurement based solely on accessible areas is needed rather than the total surface area of The Lands Between.
Using a feature on the game’s map for reference, Addypalooza was able to apply image analysis software to delineate the navigable spaces within the game. His findings suggest that the total playable area is approximately 13.48 km², much smaller than expected.
Although his measurement does not take into account the various caves and interiors, which he estimates minimally contribute to the overall size, it is a far more accurate assessment. Ultimately, combining the main game and the upcoming Land of Shadow DLC brings the total playable area to an estimated 20.5 km².
The video is visually impressive and provides context for Elden Ring’s geography, asserting that the Lands Between could easily fit within Tuvalu’s lagoon. Watch it here.
This reassessment is important as it seeks to clear up misconceptions about Elden Ring’s map size that have propagated since 2022.
