Sony Wins Bidding for Resident Evil Movie Reboot
Sony has secured the rights to produce a new Resident Evil film reboot, continuing the legacy of its predecessors.
Sony has triumphantly emerged as the victor in the bidding competition for the long-awaited Resident Evil movie reboot. This is the same studio responsible for producing the original six Resident Evil films, which were notably poorly received by critics but managed to generate over $1.2 billion in total box office revenue across the series.
Past iterations included the 2021 reboot Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which followed another lackluster release. While there is speculation about whether the eighth cinematic attempt will finally succeed, the history suggests cautious optimism.
The new film reboot is being helmed by writer and director Zach Cregger. Cregger has gained recognition for his work in recent horror films, heightening expectations for this project, even as it finds itself navigating through hefty studio rivalries.
The reboot’s financial prospects appear promising; despite previous films’ unimpressive ratings, their earning potential suggests a significant market exists. Currently, the film is slated for a release on September 18, 2026.
