League of Legends Balances Reward System Amidst Player Fury

Players express frustration over a new rewards update in League of Legends that complicates the experience for newcomers and casual gamers alike.

League of Legends players are upset with the recent decision to overhaul the reward system in an attempt to reduce ‘unnecessary complexity.’ This new structure centralizes rewards within a battle pass framework, provoking complaints from the community that it creates barriers for new and casual players.

Overview

With modifications aiming to streamline rewards, everything is now designed to funnel through the battle pass.

One of the developers, Andrei Van Roon, explained, “Over the years these systems have become needlessly complex, with an excessive number of currencies… That’s sort of a level of unnecessary complexity going on.”

Following the changes, many are calling the redesign not only unhelpful but detrimental:

The new setup reportedly requires new players to invest significantly more time to unlock basic champions, prompting concerns that League of Legends is actively discouraging newcomers.

Some players have quoted that following the update, it may take up to 882 hours to earn a new champion for free.

In essence, League of Legends, which has celebrated 16 years in the gaming world, faces long-standing challenges to attract and retain new players. The update, while intended to simplify the gameplay experience, might inadvertently isolate newcomers even further.
