Cities: Skylines 2's Asset Editor Still in Development: Colossal Order Faces Technical Challenges
Despite the launch of Cities: Skylines 2 over a year ago, the release of its asset editor remains elusive as developers at Colossal Order face unforeseen technical hurdles.
More than a year after the launch of Cities: Skylines 2 on PC, the anticipated asset editor and console versions still lack a release target. Colossal Order reported that the development of the asset editor has faced more technical difficulties than expected due to the extensive built-in assets affected by ongoing changes.
“The implementation of the Asset Editor has proven more technically challenging than initially anticipated due to the hefty amounts of built-in assets affected by the changes,” Colossal Order stated. They also emphasized their focus on resolving Unity dependencies to enhance asset loading reliability.
Despite progress, community responses have expressed frustration over the prolonged wait and lack of communication from developers, with many highlighting issues surrounding the game’s state and initial release problems. As of October 2023, Cities: Skylines 2 had received criticism for its launch quality, prompting a joint apology from Colossal Order and publisher Paradox Interactive, acknowledging the game’s premature release.
Players are still hopeful for updates, as Colossal Order hints that something special might be shared around the 10th anniversary of the original Cities: Skylines in March 2024.
