As I write this, the temperature in London is 9.4 degrees Celsius. Coincidentally, the indie puzzle game A Good Snowman is Hard To Build has just reached its 10th anniversary. What’s the connection?
This game, created by Draknek & Friends, has an innovative pricing system: the cost of the game in US dollars equals the current temperature in London in Celsius. This price updates every hour, so as it gets colder in London, the game becomes cheaper. As of now, you can snag it for $9.40.
This unique pricing model will fluctuate: by 9 PM, the forecast shows the temperature dropping to 6 Celsius, allowing players to purchase the game for only $6. By 11 PM, it’ll drop to $4, and at 6 AM tomorrow, it’s expected to reach 1 Celsius, making the game just $1.
The game itself challenges players with a simple yet engaging mechanic, where you help a charming monster build snowmen by moving snowballs in snowy gardens to stack them into traditional snowman forms. Once complete, you can even hug your creations.
This clever pricing approach is only available on Itch.io, which states that “every hour, the monster checks the temperature in London” to adjust prices accordingly. Though it’s also offered on Steam until March 7, the price there does not change based on weather.
If the London temperature reaches 0, the game becomes completely free, but note that no refunds will be given should the price drop below zero. Players can also opt to view the price in Fahrenheit or even Kelvin if they wish, but that would raise the price significantly.
Don’t Miss Out!
Consider getting A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build, especially as the temperature in London could mean a deal of a lifetime, depending on when you check it.
