New Trademark by Bandai Namco Points to a Potential Katamari Game

A fresh trademark application hints that the beloved Katamari Damacy series could return with a new console title after many years.

A recent trademark registration by Bandai Namco indicates a potential new title in the Katamari Damacy series, named Once Upon a Katamari. While details are scarce, this entry may fulfill the long-held expectations of fans.

The franchise features a small green extraterrestrial known as the Prince of All Cosmos, along with his relatives, who roll up massive spheres termed Katamari, collecting items encountered along the way. The main goal in numerous timed challenges is to create the largest possible Katamari.

Since its 2004 debut on PlayStation 2, the series has witnessed 18 subsequent releases, many of which were remakes or mobile adaptations rather than original content.

Bandai Namco’s trademark application for Once Upon a Katamari was submitted to the European Union Intellectual Property Office on February 27 and is currently pending examination. While the last installment released in 2023, titled We Love Katamari Reroll + Royal Reverie, primarily served as a remaster, the last entirely new game, Katamari Forever, appeared over a decade ago in 2009 on PlayStation 3.

Excitement surrounding a new game isn’t new; fans previously considered the announcement of We Love Katamari Reroll + Royal Reverie as a hint that new adventures might be imminent. With the original series director, Keita Takahashi, absent since 2010, it remains to be seen how the new installment will be received.
