Reasons for the Cancellation of the Wonder Woman Game Unveiled

The cancellation of the Wonder Woman game is linked to the poor performance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, according to sources. Insights reveal internal turmoil affecting the game's development.

Summary

  • The failure of Suicide Squad led to the cancellation of the Wonder Woman game.
  • Decisions made by former head David Haddad significantly impacted the game’s development.
  • Warner Bros. incurred major financial losses, resulting in Haddad’s resignation and the cancellation of Wonder Woman.

The cancellation of the Wonder Woman game was partly caused by the poor reception of the related DC title Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, according to sources. Developer Monolith, known for its work on the game, was also closed down by WB Games, alongside two other studios.

The game was first unveiled during The Game Awards in 2021, generating excitement among players with its initial teaser trailer. However, following years filled with minimal updates about the title, Warner Bros. ultimately canceled the game. The shutdown of Monolith Productions, recognized for classic titles like Shadow of Mordor, also left fans of the franchise disappointed. A credible industry insider has now provided insights into why the decision was made.

In a recent episode of the Kinda Funny Games podcast, veteran journalist Jason Schreier discussed the various issues that contributed to the cancellation of Wonder Woman. According to him, significant decisions by David Haddad had a substantial impact on the game’s trajectory. This included shutting down a new IP which led many of Monolith’s leadership to resign, resulting in disruptions as the studio tried to rebuild and simultaneously develop Wonder Woman. Furthermore, initially planned features, such as the clever Nemesis system from Shadow of Mordor, were reworked into a more linear action style akin to God of War. “However, it may have been too late by that point,” said Schreier. “Especially since last year was devastating for the Warner Bros. Games organization.”

He elaborated, “Last year, Suicide Squad was an enormous failure, resulting in a $200 million write-off. Additional losses from titles like MultiVersus and Quidditch Champions, which accounted for another $100 million, culminated in Haddad’s departure and the subsequent cancellation of Wonder Woman.” Vice President JB Perrette has since taken over the game division, focusing on revitalizing profits through major franchises, including a potential sequel to the acclaimed Hogwarts Legacy.
