Recent reports have indicated that some RTX 50-series graphics cards are being shipped with missing Raster Operation Processors (ROPs), which has raised concerns among buyers regarding their performance from this high-end upgrade. CyberPowerPC, a prominent PC builder, has taken a step to reassure its customers. The company stated:
“CyberPowerPC will ensure all systems equipped with GeForce RTX 5090, 5080, and 5070 Ti video cards have the correct number of ROPs before shipping.”
This statement was previously noted in their gaming PC section but was later removed. The reason for this discretion is yet uncertain; however, it has likely stemmed from a growing number of inquiries regarding the matter. CyberPowerPC has yet to provide further comments about this update.
For context, ROPs are critical components responsible for reading and writing pixel information on graphics cards, significant for performance, particularly in gaming. Nvidia claims that only 0.5% of the manufactured units have been affected by this issue, suggesting that overall, the impact is minimal and limited to a small batch.
The performance implications of having fewer ROPs can result in up to a 4% loss in graphical performance; however, this does not affect AI and compute workloads. Other companies in the same industry, like Maingear, have not reported any GPUs with missing ROPs, reinforcing Nvidia’s assertion of a negligible production issue.
