4G Connectivity Reaches the Moon Before My Hometown

Nokia's initiative aims to provide 4G on the moon, enhancing exploration while highlighting terrestrial network gaps.

Nokia is taking a big leap by introducing 4G connectivity to the moon, with plans to assist rovers in mapping the lunar surface, exploring craters, and even sharing amusing videos on TikTok.

When it comes to advancements in technology, it’s fascinating how ordinary aspects are elevated to extraordinary achievements, like the laying of undersea data cables and sending rockets to enhance intergalactic communication.

Nokia’s mission is part of the SpaceX IM-2 lunar mission, which launched recently from Florida. It will support not just connectivity on the moon but also enhance future NASA missions. In fact, Nokia’s system, known as the Lunar Surface Communication System (LSCS), is equipped to handle high-definition video and command communications from rovers to the lunar lander.

The tech giant aims to prove the potential of cellular technology to transform communication in other worlds, starting with the moon, and eventually Mars.

Nokia’s 4G mission highlights the contrasting reality of connectivity back on Earth, where many towns still face poor network coverage. As a fun note, if someone from Nokia could kindly launch 4G to my local area, I would truly appreciate it!

“We intend to prove that cellular technologies can provide the reliable, high-capacity and efficient connectivity needed for future crewed and uncrewed missions to the Moon and eventually Mars,” says Thierry E. Klein, president of Bell Labs Solutions Research at Nokia. “Cellular technology has irrevocably transformed the way we communicate on Earth. There’s no reason it can’t do the same for communications on other worlds.”
