BioWare Co-Founder Expresses Regret Over Jade Empire's Launch Timing
Greg Zeschuk reflects on the missed opportunity of Jade Empire's release timing and the influence of Microsoft.
BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk left the company in 2012 alongside fellow founder Ray Muzyka, shortly after selling the renowned RPG developer to Electronic Arts. The pair have been observing recent developments, especially after the mixed commercial reception of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which prompted job reductions at BioWare and a leaner team focusing solely on the next Mass Effect installment.
Zeschuk recently appeared on the My Perfect Console podcast with Simon Parkin, reflecting on Bioware’s history, including his aspirations to take over EA internally. He opened up about the regrettable advice he received regarding the release of Jade Empire.
“Microsoft was like ’no no, you should release it now, right at the end of the [console] cycle, because it’s a great time’,” Zeschuk lamented. “It was the worst advice, absolutely moronic advice from them, the stupidest thing ever.”
With hindsight, he believes that delaying the game for the Xbox 360’s launch would have made it more successful. “We could have rezzed [Jade Empire] up, we could have amped it up,” Zeschuk said. He opined that this could have led to BioWare having another franchise alongside Dragon Age and Mass Effect.
Currently, Zeschuk is focused on his craft beer business, with Jade Empire still available on Steam. His complete interview is accessible through My Perfect Console.
