Physical Copies of Assassin's Creed Shadows Surface Before Official Release

Reports indicate that physical copies of Assassin's Creed Shadows have leaked online ahead of the game's planned launch.

Nearly a month before its scheduled release, copies of Assassin’s Creed Shadows have reportedly leaked, with players sharing images, gameplay clips, and details on social media.

Reports suggest that these copies are available on platforms like Facebook Marketplace, and even on Mercari, as highlighted at TheGamer. Gameplay clips have circulated on Twitch and other platforms, although Ubisoft is swiftly trying to remove these, they are still accessible with a bit of searching. (To prevent spoilers, we will not be sharing any links.)

One user on Reddit noted that the version being played is an ‘old build’ missing several promised enhancements that were to accompany the game’s delay from 2024. Given that discs were likely produced weeks or months ago and with weeks still remaining before full launch, this isn’t shocking. In today’s digital era, developers typically work up until release day, ensuring any necessary patches are available by the time players receive their copies.

This leak poses an unwanted complication for Ubisoft, especially considering the many challenges Assassin’s Creed Shadows has faced since its announcement in 2024. The game has had to deal with player backlash over the inclusion of the Black samurai Yasuke, various self-inflicted controversies, and multiple delays pushing its release into February and later into March.

In a message shared on X, Ubisoft reiterated the incomplete state of the current build circulating online: “We are aware players have accessed Assassin’s Creed Shadows ahead of its official release. The development team is still working on patches for launch preparation, and any footage shared does not represent the final quality of the game.”

They further mentioned: “Leaks are unfortunate and can diminish excitement for players. We kindly ask you not to spoil the experience for others. Thank you to our community for taking steps to protect everyone from spoilers.”
