Dauntless, the acclaimed monster-hunting game, is set to close its doors

Phoenix Labs announces the shutdown of Dauntless, citing a decline in player engagement following major company layoffs.

The popular Dauntless game, which gained significant attention upon its release five years ago, is set to officially shut down. The developer, Phoenix Labs, announced via Steam that no further updates or new content will be available, rendering the game unplayable after May 29, 2025.

The studio stated: “Dauntless is shutting down on May 29, 2025. Dauntless will receive no additional content or updates. The game will no longer be available to play on May 29, 2025.”

This terse notice marks the end of a game once lauded as the long-awaited PC entry into the monster hunting genre, especially following the entry of Monster Hunter: World by Capcom, which overshadowed Dauntless soon after it launched.

In early 2024, Phoenix Labs faced major difficulties, resulting in substantial layoffs and the cancellation of ongoing projects as a ’last-ditch resort’ to keep the studio afloat. Following a failed transition to Steam, where player ratings plummeted, the studio’s troubles compounded.

As the community reacts to the news, questions loom regarding the status of Fae Farm, another title by Phoenix Labs.
