As someone with a background in Roman history, I was eager to try out Alessandro Roberti’s new RPG, Never Second In Rome, which just launched in early access.
In the game, you are a centurion under the command of Julius Caesar, aiming to gain his favor while maintaining your troops’ discipline. The gameplay is primarily text-based, reminiscent of Long Live the Queen but infused with die-rolling mechanics.
Once your centurion is created—deciding his origins and skillset—you begin in a safe camp. The game emphasizes time management; every decision affects the training of your men and the overall operation.
The game mechanic is strategic, with a focus on maintaining troop morale and skill development amidst constant battle engagements against foes like the Helvetii barbarians. The challenge lies in balancing leadership roles while being prepared for direct confrontation.
The intricate combat mechanics and narrative choices are designed to engage players deeply in the simulation of life under an ambitious Roman general.
