Minecraft Creator Abandons Second Installment Plans After Initial Hype

Markus Persson, better known as Notch, retracts his announcement of Minecraft 2 amid widespread online discussion.

After creating a buzz by seemingly announcing Minecraft 2 last week, Markus “Notch” Persson has now reversed that decision. The game creator sparked interest with a Twitter poll where he indicated interest in making a spiritual successor to Minecraft. However, he has changed his mind following discussions with his team.

Recent Developments

Persson tweeted, “Talked to the fellas at the office, looks like we’re making Levers and Chests! Tipping point was PC Gamer saying it seemed interesting, lol. Yeah I still love PC Gamer.” This comment came as a disappointment for fans eagerly anticipating a potential sequel.

Reason for Abandonment

In light of recent changes, Persson explained that he believes spiritual successors often become sad nostalgia dumps. He shared, “Trust me, the spiritual successor would be way less fun than the dungeon roguelike.” His new project, Levers and Chests, is set to offer a different gaming experience compared to what fans might have expected from a new Minecraft title.

Looking Ahead

For those who were looking forward to Minecraft 2, it seems like that particular dream has been put on hold—at least for now. As Persson noted, “You’ll have to ask Microsoft about that one,” highlighting that the franchise has been out of his control since Mojang’s acquisition.

With the gaming industry always evolving, fans can anticipate what Persson and Mojang will create next.
