Overwatch 2’s Season 16 kicked off last night, bringing a multitude of features like perks and loot boxes, along with a user interface overhaul and a rank reset. While this season marks a significant update, it is deemed necessary due to the growing competition from games such as Marvel Rivals.
“We are clearly operating in a new competitive landscape that Overwatch has never truly experienced before, with another game so similar to us existing in the market,” said Aaron Keller, the game director. He expressed excitement about the challenges and opportunities this new environment presents.
Keller added, “This is no longer about playing it safe. Seasons 15 and 16 indicate we are taking risks that our passionate team of developers welcome.”
The launch has introduced new perks that will impact both casual and competitive play significantly. Alec Dawson, lead gameplay designer, noted that this dynamic shift allows the team to experiment more freely with game balance.
For instance, perks like Reaper’s new Dire Triggers grant him a long-range shot capability with his shotguns, and Pharah’s Drift Thrusters allow movement during her ultimate ability.
As players dive into this season, the gameplay dynamics are set to engage and surprise them with these adjustments, although some heroes may initially feel overpowered. The commencement of competitive matches has showcased the potential for an exciting and varied gameplay experience as these new mechanics unfold.
