Loot Boxes Make a Comeback in Overwatch 2: Director Shares Insights
Overwatch 2's director reveals the reasoning behind reintroducing loot boxes in the game, aiming to enhance player rewards and satisfaction.
Summary
- Overwatch 2 brings back loot boxes through free and premium battle passes, weekly missions, and events.
- Loot boxes return to address a lack of rewards for players.
- These loot boxes will contain cosmetics released a season prior to those available in the store.
Overwatch 2’s director has emphasized that one of the main motives for reintroducing loot boxes is the game’s perceived lack of rewards. Previously a polarizing feature, the loot boxes had been removed in Overwatch 2, but with the rising concerns among players, they are making a return.
Keller noted that while loot boxes have been a known aspect since the inception of Overwatch, their structure will differ this time. Most cosmetics available in the store will also be provided via loot boxes, with items being one season behind what players can purchase directly.
In addition to introducing loot boxes, Overwatch 2 will incorporate new gameplay elements including a stadium mode, hero banning, and map voting, aimed at enhancing the user experience.
