Viktor Antonov, the Bulgarian artist renowned for his role as art director on the iconic games Half-Life 2 and Dishonored, has tragically passed away at the age of 52. This news was confirmed by former colleagues in the gaming industry, who have shared their reflections on Antonov’s artistic legacy.

Antonov made significant contributions not only to video games but also to films, beginning his career with titles like Kingpin and Redneck Rampage at Xatrix Entertainment. His most defining works in video gaming include serving as the art lead for Half-Life 2 and Dishonored, where he created the unique visual identities of the Combine and the city of City 17.

Antonov’s distinctive style transformed the aesthetics of these games, directing the visual narrative to invoke rich environments that blended history and fiction.

The announcement of his death was first made public by Marc Laidlaw, a former writer at Valve, who expressed his shock and sadness. Pete Hines, former marketing lead at Bethesda, and Raphaël Colantonio, founder of Arkane Studios, joined in honoring Antonov’s contributions to the gaming world. Harvey Smith, creative director of Dishonored, also fondly recalled their experiences together, highlighting Antonov’s immense talent and wit.
