Baldur's Gate 4 Announced by HBO, Not as Expected
HBO is adapting Baldur's Gate 3 with Craig Mazin at the helm, continuing the story of the beloved game.
American filmmaker Craig Mazin (known for The Last of Us and Chernobyl) will be adapting Baldur’s Gate 3 for HBO following the conclusion of The Last of Us, which is expected to be its final season. While The Last of Us serves as a direct adaptation, Baldur’s Gate 3 will present a different narrative approach, as Mazin has stated it ‘will continue the story’ of the game.
Fans may recall that Larian Studios chose to redirect its focus back to its original IP, Divinity, rather than pursuing additional content for Baldur’s Gate 3. Amid this, Wizards of the Coast has shown interest in a potential Baldur’s Gate 4, suggesting that Mazin’s adaptation might be considered canonical.
Set in the iconic Dungeons and Dragons universe of Faerun, Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the most significant games released in recent years. HBO has decided to create a drama series based on the game, with Craig Mazin taking on the roles of creator, writer, and producer alongside Jacqueline Lesko and Cecil O’Conner, with contributions from Gabriel Marano of Hasbro Entertainment. Chris Perkins, serving as a consultant from Hasbro, provides additional insight to the adaptation process.
The HBO adaptation starts right after the video game’s finale, where both new and old characters face the aftermath of the city’s devastation. However, the precise storyline—and which of the game’s multiple endings it will adopt—remains unclear.
Reflecting on his monumental experience with the game, Mazin expressed:
“After investing nearly 1000 hours into the remarkable world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to help continue the journey crafted by Larian and Wizards of The Coast.”
Mazin’s enthusiasm is evident, emphasizing collaboration with the original Baldur’s Gate 3 cast, many of whom portrayed beloved characters compellingly. Neil Newbon, known for voicing Astarion, has previously indicated interest in reprising his role, stirring excitement among fans.
