Roblox Faces Ban in Russia Over Allegations of Propaganda

The Russian government has issued a ban on Roblox, citing its propagation of extremist content, affecting millions of users.

Roblox is now banned in Russia due to government accusations claiming it facilitates the dissemination of propaganda including materials linked to terrorism and support for LGBTQIA+ rights. This ban is set to restrict access for over 2 million daily users in Russia.

Initially launched in 2006, Roblox has emerged as a leading online gaming platform, hosting a community exceeding 100 million monthly players engaging with numerous games crafted by fans. The most popular games have surpassed 120,000 daily players even as new controversies arise.

Countries Where Roblox is Ban or Restricted

  • Indonesia
  • Greece
  • Guatemala
  • Jordan
  • North Korea
  • Russia
  • Saudi Arabia
  • United Arab Emirates (UAE)

According to TASS, the Roskomnadzor agency enforced the ban citing issues with materials spreading extremist ideologies and harmful activities. The agency’s report indicated the concern over incitement to unlawful behavior, including sexual offenses, harassment of minors, and distribution of intimate content.

Following earlier bans on platforms like Facebook and Discord, this action marks a continuation of the Russian government’s stringent control over media since its conflict with Ukraine. Meanwhile, several game developers have chosen to discontinue services for users in Russia due to geopolitical tensions, including EA’s removal of titles like Apex Legends and FIFA from the Russian market.

Despite its popularity, Roblox is currently embroiled in multiple child safety lawsuits alleging negligence in protecting minors from content considered inappropriate and from potential predators. The company has proposed new safety measures including an age verification system to address these concerns.

Conclusion

This latest development adds to a challenging year for Roblox, further complicating its standing in global markets as it seeks solutions to address legal and operational hurdles.
