After months of public dispute, artist Antireal revealed on Twitter that an agreement has successfully been reached concerning the plagiarism claims against Bungie, the studio behind Marathon, and its parent company, Sony. Antireal first brought attention to allegations in May, claiming that assets from their designs were used in an alpha build of the game without consent.
Since its unveiling, Marathon has encountered multiple controversies, the most significant being the original claims of art theft by Antireal, who pointed out that Bungie’s alpha version incorporated elements from posters they had created back in 2017. Bungie promptly acknowledged these claims, stating they were undergoing an investigation into the matter.
As discussions between both parties progressed, Antireal confirmed that the issue had been addressed satisfactorily. Although specifics regarding compensation or credit have not been disclosed, it appears the resolution was reached quietly and amicably, despite the oversight involving both Bungie and Sony.
In past discussions, Sony expressed intentions of tightening its oversight on Bungie, especially following significant feedback on the game’s initial alpha and the subsequent need for delays and revisions before its launch on platforms including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
