Open Source Future for Garry's Mod Successor s&box: Garry's Insights
Garry's Mod successor s&box goes open source, allowing developers to contribute freely while revealing insights on the game's direction and finances.
Facepunch Studios has announced the open-source release of s&box, the anticipated successor to Garry’s Mod. Studio founder Garry Newman stated on social media, “We’re awesome,” acknowledging their innovation. The complete s&box code is available on GitHub.
The decision to open the project aims to allow developers to view, modify, and use the code to create standalone games or maintain their forks under the MIT license. Garry expressed that despite the unusual business decision, giving away the engine and code reflects their passion for creating opportunities within the gaming community.
Garry elaborated, “Valve gave me my chance. I’m already rich. I don’t want to f*ck anyone over. I want to give opportunities to the next generation, like Valve did me. We can all win together.”
For a more in-depth understanding, s&box is regarded as a product of the Source 2 engine, positioned as a modern development environment that allows for greater flexibility and potential than Garry’s Mod. The game is set for an early access launch in Q1 2026 on Steam, with developers encouraged to participate in refining the platform.
