Epic Games CEO Critiques Steam's AI Disclosure Requirements

Tim Sweeney expresses concerns over Valve's AI policies, deeming them irrelevant as more games integrate AI technologies.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has publicly criticized Steam’s AI disclosure requirement, stating that it is losing relevance as a growing number of titles incorporate generative AI technologies.

According to Sweeney, Valve’s rule, which mandates developers to reveal AI-generated content in their game listings, doesn’t hold significant value anymore. This requirement was added to the Steam Distribution Agreement following reports that Valve was banning games using AI-generated content. Valve claims that this disclosure will allow the release of most AI-reliant games.

Sweeney also pointed to data indicating that while many new game releases incorporate AI, less than 7% of titles on Steam currently show this disclosure. He anticipates that soon nearly all listings will require an AI label, echoing sentiments of other developers like Thomas Bithell, who has voiced concerns over the implications of AI in game development.
