Obsidian's Outer Worlds 2 Isn't a Critique of Capitalism, According to Director

Obsidian Entertainment clarifies that their upcoming game, The Outer Worlds 2, is not intentionally targeting capitalism.

The Outer Worlds 2, set in a satirical version of a capitalist world, is not intended to deliver a direct critique of capitalism, according to its director Brandon Adler.

Absurdity in Context

In a recent discussion on the podcast My Perfect Console, Adler stated,

“We’re not going out of our way and saying ‘Let’s do a critique of capitalism as we currently see it,’” indicating that the game’s narrative is aimed at exploring power structures rather than capitalism itself.

He pointed to the villainous Order of the Ascendant, which aims to “perfect humanity” at any cost, highlighting the historical continuity of abuse by those in power over the disadvantaged.

Adler’s remarks align with past comments from Fallout co-creator Tim Cain, who also dismissed the notion that earlier entries in Fallout were intended as critiques of capitalism.
