Udo Kier, the iconic star of Red Alert 2, passes away at 81: 'A true legend'

Udo Kier, celebrated for his roles in cinema and video games, has died at the age of 81. His contributions spanned several artistic fields, making him a beloved figure in pop culture.

Udo Kier—the exceptionally prolific German actor best recognized as Yuri from Red Alert 2, Command and Conquer: Yuri’s Revenge, and a key figure in Hideo Kojima’s upcoming game OD—has passed away at the age of 81. His partner, Delbert McBride, confirmed the news to Variety.

Kier’s remarkable career spanned over 200 films, gaining fame for his collaborations with artistic legends such as Andy Warhol, Lars von Trier, and Werner Herzog. He also appeared in music videos for notable artists including Madonna and Gwen Stefani.

For many, Kier will always be the memorably eccentric character Yuri, a psychic antagonist from Red Alert 2 who attempted to take control of the Soviet Union and threaten the U.S. His captivating performance has significantly influenced the impact of the games on their devoted fanbase.

In anticipation of OD, Kier’s partner noted that he was enthusiastic about the project, having discussed his excitement about returning to filming next year. Hideo Kojima contributed a heartfelt tribute on social media, expressing disbelief at Kier’s departure and honoring his legacy.

“Udo wasn’t just an actor; he was a true icon of his time, and there will never be another like him. Udo, rest in peace. You will not be forgotten.”
