Microsoft Azure Faces Outage Following AWS Incident, Blamed on Configuration Error

Microsoft's Azure service experiences significant outages just a week after AWS's major disruption, pointing to a configuration issue once again.

If you’re encountering issues downloading Outer Worlds 2, playing Minecraft, or booking flights from Heathrow, it’s due to disruptions caused by the Azure outage.

Recent Outage Summary

On October 29, 2025, Microsoft reported that Azure services, including their cloud and 365 offerings, were experiencing widespread disruptions. The incident emerged shortly before the company’s quarterly financial report. The problem was first highlighted by the game development studio Obsidian, which noted that Outer Worlds 2 might not be accessible on Xbox due to Azure issues.

“Due to an ongoing Azure service outage, The Outer Worlds 2 may be temporarily unavailable to purchase or install on Xbox Series X|S, the Xbox app on PC, and with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass.” — @obsidian.net

This downtime is not merely an inconvenience for game downloads; it’s a much larger issue affecting numerous websites and systems, including significant entities like Heathrow Airport and NatWest Bank. The source of the outage is believed to be a misconfiguration made within Azure infrastructure, mirroring the recent AWS outage, which was also linked to a bug.

Microsoft has stated that they are actively working to resolve the issues by rolling back to a previous stable configuration. However, there are no current estimates available for when normal service will resume. As Azure holds a substantial portion of the cloud market, this incident could have considerable repercussions.
