Last month, Capcom made the decision to implement an unusual charge for viewing the Capcom Cup Finals and the Street Fighter League: World Championship online.
Unsurprisingly, this shift to a pay-per-view model has sparked significant backlash, particularly in Western regions. Initially, tickets were set at ¥4,000 (about $27) each or ¥6,000 for a bundle (approximately $40).
The community response has been largely negative. Many fans voiced their disappointment on platforms like Reddit, with one user calling it an “insane decision” and expressing hope that others in the fighting game community would boycott this model.
Statements from Capcom indicated intentions to review these pricing strategies as they push for a more sustainable esports business model, reaffirming their commitment to enhancing the esports scene. However, the timing of their pricing updates remains uncertain.
Capcom has emphasized the need to transform its tournaments into more competitive events through economic reinvestment, despite the considerable public disagreement over their latest policy changes.
