Helldivers 2 Developers Considering Ending HDD Support to Optimize PC Installation Size

Arrowhead Game Studios is exploring the option of removing HDD support for the PC version of Helldivers 2 to mitigate its growing installation size.

Arrowhead Game Studios is contemplating the removal of hard disk drive (HDD) support for the PC version of Helldivers 2. This decision is under consideration to aid in decreasing the game’s large installation footprint on PC.

The pre-launch requirements for the Helldivers 2 PC version initially required over 100GB of disk space, though after the initial download, the install folder shrank to approximately 70GB. However, the game has seen an increase in storage requirements due to updates, leading to a current requirement of 135GB.

In a message on the Helldivers Discord server, CEO Shams Jorjani indicated that they are “looking into” the possibility of removing HDD support in response to player concerns regarding installation sizes. It was noted that as HDDs are slower than solid-state drives (SSDs), some data must be duplicated to enhance loading speeds, contributing to larger installation requirements.
