Developers of Halo: Campaign Evolved Address AI Usage Concerns
Leading members of Halo: Campaign Evolved’s creative team have not ruled out the possibility of utilizing generative AI in the development of the forthcoming campaign-focused first-person shooter. Anticipation for the remake of Microsoft’s legendary Halo: Combat Evolved is high due to various factors, yet skepticism persists among anti-AI gamers following recent statements.

Confirmation of the Halo remake arrived amidst a flurry of speculation at the 2025 Halo World Championships on October 24, with a release slated for 2026. This remake not only revives the original Xbox hit but also marks the first time a Halo game will be available on PlayStation.
Generative AI in Halo Remake is Still Unclear
While the announcement has generated considerable excitement for Microsoft, remarks from two key figures have raised questions regarding the use of AI tools in developing Halo: Campaign Evolved. Xbox and PlayStation have been reported to use generative AI in game development. Notably, during an interview with Rolling Stone, Game Director Greg Hermann and Executive Producer Damon Conn avoided clear confirmations or denials about AI usage.
When pressed, Conn stated, “Video games are developed by creative people, but if there’s an opportunity to improve a workflow, we’ll look at it again.”
Hermann’s follow-up remarks also did not provide definitive answers but seemed to blur the lines concerning what constitutes generative AI usage at Microsoft, mentioning that they utilize Adobe Photoshop’s generative fill as a tool for enhancing game creation.
These statements introduce ambiguity about the role of generative AI in the remake’s development. Earlier, industry insider Jez Corden asserted that the development team is not employing generative AI in asset creation, with Microsoft not enforcing any AI mandate upon its studios. This claim was reasserted by an Xbox representative after the interview. Conversely, some speculate that while generative AI aids workflow, it may not be directly involved in generating in-game content.
