ROG Xbox Ally X May Perform Even Better with Linux than Windows

The ROG Xbox Ally X shows potential for improved gaming performance when running on a Linux-based operating system, enhancing user experience significantly.

The Asus ROG Xbox Ally X is proving to be a compelling option for handheld gaming. Recent developments indicate that it may run significantly better on a Linux OS known as Bazzite, which has been tested to show improved frame rates compared to its default Windows environment.

Following tests by a tech YouTuber named Cyber Dopamine, the performance of the Ally X in Bazzite suggested a remarkable increase in FPS—up to 32% higher in some games like Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. While traditionally, Windows might handle gaming quite well, Bazzite seems to offer a balance of better resource management, leading to a smoother gaming flow and faster transitions when waking from sleep mode.

The great aspect for users is that they need not choose just one operating system; the Ally X can dual-boot between Windows and Bazzite, allowing for flexibility based on users’ preferences and gaming needs.

“This, crucially, looks to be the case at around the 17 W TDP mark.” — (Translation: This is notably effective at a thermal design power (TDP) of approximately 17 watts.)

While the Linux option may not yet match the breadth of support that Windows can provide, it opens up new avenues for enhancing performance, especially for those familiar with the Linux environment.
