Remedy Entertainment CEO Steps Down Amid FBC: Firebreak Struggles

Tero Virtala departs from Remedy after a tenure marked by bold innovations and recent setbacks.

It has been an unusual period for Remedy Entertainment. The studio, known for its innovative games, is in a paradox: it’s achieving independence and success, yet grappling with disappointing launches like FBC: Firebreak, which prompted a profit warning to shareholders.

Tero Virtala has announced his resignation after leading the company for nine years. While specifics about his departure remain undisclosed, his exit follows notable turmoil, indicating someone has to take responsibility for the studio’s recent struggles.

In his absence, Markus Mäki, the chief product officer and one of Remedy’s co-founders, will oversee operations until a permanent CEO is found. The transition raises concerns about maintaining the momentum of creative projects like Control and the acclaimed Alan Wake 2, which have been critically well-received, suggesting a strong but uncertain foundation for the future.
