Samsung Unveils an $1,800 XR Headset, Drowning Out the Apple Vision Pro's Sorrow

Samsung's latest XR headset aims to outshine the competition with innovative features and a competitive price.

Here come the goggles again. But better, perhaps.

Samsung has recently launched its Galaxy XR headset, priced at $1,800. If you’re listening closely, you might hear the anguished cries of the Apple Vision Pro as it grapples with being overshadowed by its competitor.

While the Vision Pro was met with skepticism due to its odd design that resembled scuba goggles and a steep price of $3,499, Samsung has aimed to address these critiques with their new model, boasting improvements on paper.

The pricing of the Galaxy XR is significantly more appealing, making it nearly half the cost of the Vision Pro. Aesthetically, it appears sleek enough to avoid the awkwardness of its rival.

Equipped with 12 cameras and multiple sensors, the Galaxy XR runs on the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip, promising an immersive experience that includes both Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality capabilities. Unlike its competitor, it also offers greater customization through its Android XR OS.

The device uses high-resolution Micro-OLED displays, and its AI software features, including a unique object recognition tool, enhance usability. In contrast, previous implementations on the Vision Pro left users wanting more.

While the Galaxy XR’s price tag still raises eyebrows, its promising features may sway buyers previously interested in the Vision Pro. Even though I’m not planning to don a pair in public anytime soon, it certainly represents a step forward in XR technology.
