Wikipedia is undergoing a significant shift as it sees a decline in human pageviews during recent months. This change has been noted by Marshall Miller from the Wikimedia Foundation, who mentioned that there has been an 8% decrease in pageviews compared to the same months in 2024.

“We believe that these declines reflect the impact of generative AI and social media on how people seek information,” says Miller. Translation: “We think these declines show how AI and social media are changing the way users look for information.”

The Wikimedia Foundation is actively working to adapt to this trend as it recognizes the increasing influence of both AI and social media on content consumption. They assert that new measures will be introduced to ensure sustainable use of Wikipedia’s content by third parties.
