In the upcoming game Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Capcom has partnered with the estate of Toshiro Mifune, a legendary figure in Japanese cinema, to bring back his likeness. This decision pays homage to his iconic role as the swordsman Miyamoto Musashi in films directed by Akira Kurosawa.
Mifune’s image will be utilized to represent Musashi, who embarks on supernatural adventures, employing an Oni Gauntlet against hordes of demonic foes. As of December, Capcom has been hinting at this revival with various teasers.
Here’s a quote from Capcom about the character:
“Musashi is a fierce young samurai who, in a supernatural twist of fate, finds himself wielding an Oni Gauntlet and battling hordes of demonic Genma.”
The game’s official site details that Kenichiro Thomson will provide the voice for Musashi, while Mifune’s likeness is set to emphasize this rendition of the legendary samurai.
Mifune, who passed away nearly thirty years ago, remains an influential figure in film and culture, and Capcom’s commitment to his image suggests a deep respect for his contributions to samurai cinema.
