According to a new rumor, the potential for official Xbox emulation on Windows might be in development.
Sources say a well-known Microsoft insider, Jez Corden, hinted at the capability to play classic Xbox games on PC. He noted that while the solution could provide easier access to various titles from the original Xbox, it may not appear as a standard emulator.
In a recent conversation over The Xbox Two Podcast Discord server, Corden discussed how the ROG Xbox Ally series might expand its offerings to include classic games. He mentioned that work is reportedly underway to develop a Windows emulator that could run some Xbox titles, projected for potential commercialization by 2026.
Corden also emphasized the significance of backward compatibility with Xbox 360 titles, although anything resembling a traditional emulator could face licensing challenges. Microsoft might need to pursue partnerships with publishers to navigate these legal hurdles.
As it stands, the emulation solution would likely resemble a selective gaming library similar to applications used by Nintendo Switch Online, rather than providing access to every game. With the gaming industry increasingly focused on a platform-agnostic future, this move could align with Microsoft’s goals.
