Marvel Cinematic Universe star Simu Liu has shared an optimistic update regarding the film adaptation of Sleeping Dogs, indicating progress on the project. Liu had expressed his desire to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen back in January 2025, and his latest update has sparked renewed interest among fans about the film’s development.

Originally launched for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 in 2012, Sleeping Dogs presents an open-world action narrative centered on undercover officer Wei Shen as he aims to dismantle the Triad crime syndicate in Hong Kong. Although enthusiasts have yearned for a sequel, a previous attempt by Square Enix to produce one was scrapped. Liu’s tweet on October 18 announced that the script draft has now been completed, with fans reacting enthusiastically by showcasing their favorite moments from the game on social media.

“I believe the studio has been receptive to our ideas,” Liu stated regarding his collaboration with Square Enix. Translation: “Creo que el estudio ha sido receptivo a nuestras ideas.”

Liu also noted the primary challenge lies in convincing film studios about the significance of this intellectual property but remains optimistic about its direction. While there were initial discussions about securing the rights to Sleeping Dogs, it appears the film is already in development with Story Kitchen at the helm, with Liu portraying Wei Shen.

This isn’t Liu’s first interaction with film adaptation for Sleeping Dogs; in 2017, actor and filmmaker Donnie Yen had also planned a version but later announced its cancellation. As video game adaptations gain popularity, Liu’s involvement could bring this cult-classic video game to life in cinemas.
