OpenAI Halts Generation of 'Disrespectful' Deepfakes of Martin Luther King Jr.

Following a request from the estate of Martin Luther King Jr., OpenAI ceases the creation of AI-generated videos featuring the civil rights leader's likeness, raising important questions about the ethical use of AI in representing deceased individuals.

OpenAI has announced it’s stopping its AI video-generating app Sora from creating visuals featuring the image of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the request of his estate.

The civil rights legend, assassinated in April 1968, has been depicted in ways seen as disrespectful, such as creating videos where he delivers the iconic “I have a dream” speech while making monkey noises, and in soulless reimaginings with contemporary figures such as Malcolm X.

This prompted a statement from OpenAI, who acknowledged these portrayals as insensitive and has now placed restrictions to uphold the dignity of historical figures.

“It is deeply disrespectful and hurtful to see my father’s image used in such a cavalier and insensitive manner when he dedicated his life to truth,” said Ilyasah Shabazz, daughter of Malcolm X, expressing the hurt endured by families.

In contrast, Bernice A. King, daughter of Dr. King, expressed her agreement with the cessation of such practices and has called for further regulation.

Commentators, including experts like Henry Ajder, have raised vital questions regarding the implications of synthetic resurrection, particularly for lesser-known deceased individuals who don’t have powerful estates advocating for their legacy. Alex Hirsch provocatively questioned whether the business model of AI culture promotes disrespecting the memories of deceased icons until their families intervene.
