A recent study has revealed that AI-generated content has overtaken human-written articles on the internet, yet there is a silver lining: the rate of AI output seems to have leveled off.
According to research by Five Percent, they analyzed content published online from January 2020 to May 2025, discovering that by late last year, articles created through AI surpassed those authored by humans.
However, the data indicates that the volume of AI-generated pieces is no longer climbing rapidly, showing signs of stabilization since mid-2023.
The report suggests possible reasons for this plateau, stating, “While AI-generated articles grew dramatically after ChatGPT launched, we do not see that trend continuing. Instead, the proportion of AI-generated articles has remained relatively stable over the last 12 months. We hypothesize that this is because practitioners found that AI-generated articles do not perform well in search, as shown in a separate study.” This suggests that Google has been effective in filtering out lower-quality AI content.
Moreover, while the study’s findings are intriguing, they depend on one AI detection program, which has a 4.2% false positive rate, raising questions about robustness and accuracy in determining human vs. AI-generated content.
The results of this study provide hopeful insights: as technology improves, it may be that more publishers feel inclined to rely on human writers for the quality that search engines prioritize.
