After discovering his cult classic '90s RPG inspired Undertale, a Japanese developer gains the courage to create a new RPG decades later with help from Toby Fox
Yoshiro Kimura's upcoming game Stray Children draws inspiration from both Moon: Remix RPG and Undertale, marking his return to RPG development.
Yoshiro Kimura, whose classic 1997 RPG Moon: Remix RPG Adventure influenced the creation of Undertale, is finally taking the plunge back into game development after years of reflection. His upcoming project, Stray Children, is set to launch on October 30, 2025. This title serves as a spiritual successor to his earlier work, blending unique elements from both Moon and Undertale.
Kimura reflects, “The most important thing for me when talking about Toby Fox in public is that I really like him, and because I really like him and respect him, I don’t want anyone to get the impression I’m trying to use his name.” He acknowledges that while Stray Children shares inspiration with Undertale, it stands on its own merit, showcasing his creative journey over the years. Toby Fox’s encouragement has been pivotal in rekindling Kimura’s passion for developing new games. Expect a mix of challenge and heartwarming interactions in Stray Children, where players can heal as well as battle unique creatures known as “Olders”.
