Blizzard has rekindled the spirit of a beloved past expansion in World of Warcraft, offering players a chance to plunge back into their favorite quests and dungeons—this time with enhanced power compared to 2016. However, amidst this nostalgia, players are encountering an unexpectedly peculiar challenge: an abundance of tank classes has taken over, leaving damage dealers desperately needed.
The new expansion, WoW Legion Remix, is presenting a chance to attain previously elusive achievements and cosmetics, as long as players engage in collective raids and dungeons. But early into the revamped expansion, many are finding it hard to build parties due to an oversaturation of players opting for tank roles. In a rather ironic turn of events, tanks dominate the available classes, contrary to the usual expectation of varied roles.
With the continual advancement of gear upgrades, characters focused on raw damage or healing seem less essential, causing a bottleneck effect with tanks at the forefront. Players, including Reddit user Fjoes, have voiced their frustration regarding numerous groups composed solely of tanks—an unusual meta whereby individuals suited for DPS or healing roles are left waiting for their chance to join in.
“I feel incredibly useless most of the time, but wow, I get groups fast,” wrote Reddit user KerissaKenro reflecting on her experiences as a healer.
Though previous expansions had highlighted tank strength, current evidence suggests players anticipated this outcome and prepared accordingly. A brief look at the leaderboard detailing top solo clears for Mythic+ dungeons reveals that no other roles can rival tanks in pure strength, largely attributed to their resilience and tolerable damage output against formidable bosses.
As some players remain locked out, hoping for contributions from others who might choose less effective roles, the issue of balance continues to hinder the overall community experience. Blizzard has addressed rapid item upgrade methods swiftly but has yet to acknowledge or rectify the glaring disparities in role representation within the game.
