Optical Gaming Mice Could Be Listening to You, Researchers Warn

A concerning study suggests optical gaming mice might be capable of eavesdropping on conversations, potentially turning them into makeshift microphones.

Researchers have raised alarming concerns that optical gaming mice might be capable of spying on users’ conversations. This technology could exploit the high polling rates and sensitivity of these devices, turning them into covert listening devices.

In a recent demonstration video, a neural model showcased an ability to clean up audio captured via these mice more effectively than traditional methods. The study suggests that not only consumer-grade mice but specifically high-performance gaming mice are at risk of being compromised this way.

According to the researchers, video games are particularly vulnerable to these exploits due to their networking code, providing an ideal cover for such activities. Users are advised to lower their mouse polling rates as a precaution.
