Microsoft Tightens Installation Requirements for Windows 11

Microsoft is making it increasingly challenging to install Windows 11 without an internet connection or Microsoft account, raising concerns among users.

The latest Insider Preview build of Windows 11 introduces a significant change that may concern users wanting to install the operating system without an internet connection and a Microsoft account.

According to Microsoft’s blog post, Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.6772 will remove the ability to create a local account during the initial setup process (OOBE). Microsoft states: “We are removing known mechanisms for creating a local account in the Windows Setup experience (OOBE).”

“While these mechanisms were often used to bypass Microsoft account setup, they also inadvertently skip critical setup screens, potentially causing users to exit OOBE with a device that is not fully configured for use. Users will need to complete OOBE with internet and a Microsoft account, to ensure device is set up correctly.”

The sentiment among users is that this trend is leading to more restrictive practices when installing Windows 11. In a recent Reddit post, it was noted that alternative methods exist which might still allow for local account creation, although these remain uncertain following the latest updates.

It appears that Microsoft is increasingly enforcing these requirements, which may leave those aiming for a completely offline installation frustrated.
