A security vulnerability recently found in Unity has led to the temporary removal of some popular games from the Steam platform. The vulnerability, which had remained dormant for almost a decade, necessitated updates across titles built using the Unity engine, prompting a response from Microsoft. Games such as Fallout Shelter, Pentiment, and several others are currently unavailable for new purchases, although existing owners can still access them. Microsoft has advised users to temporarily uninstall these applications until the patches are completed. The implications of this vulnerability extend beyond Unity, affecting any games with companion apps built in Unity, even those not directly developed with the engine. As Unity explained, while the vulnerability does not seem to have resulted in active exploitation yet, it is essential for developers to address this issue promptly to ensure user safety.
