Microsoft is Set to Launch a Free Version of Xbox Cloud Gaming Supported by Ads
The upcoming free version of Xbox Cloud Gaming from Microsoft will be ad-supported, with internal tests indicating a limit on usage.
The best things in life are… ad-supported?
Earlier this week, Microsoft announced an up to 50% price increase for Xbox Game Pass, which allows for some interesting insights into their planned ad-supported version of Xbox Cloud Gaming. Sources at Microsoft reported that they are testing a free version of this service, which requires users to watch ads before accessing gameplay.
According to The Verge, internal testing includes around two minutes of preroll ads, and there is a one-hour session limit, offering users up to five hours of gameplay for free each month. These specifics may change once this ad-supported service formally launches. Microsoft previously hinted at this model with comments made by CFO Tim Stuart, but the experience for free users may be less optimal compared to paid subscribers.
If you’re only interested in streaming games you already own, consider the free, open-source option of Sunshine paired with Moonlight, which avoids any ads altogether while allowing you to enjoy high-quality remote play.
