Fortnite Clarifies Emote Changes After Peacemaker Controversy
Fortnite reworks the Peaceful Hips emote following recent controversies to prevent misunderstandings.
Last week, Fortnite withdrew the Peaceful Hips emote—which mirrored the opening dance from James Gunn’s DC series Peacemaker—after critical context was altered in the latest episode.
Epic Games stated that they would “investigate our partner’s creative intentions regarding this collaborative emote.” They have since determined that Warner Bros. was not trying to mislead them, but they are altering the emote for precautionary measures.
Warning: spoilers for Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 6 ahead!
The emote was introduced to the Fortnite store earlier in September, then swiftly removed following the shocking reveal from the episode, which showcased a dystopian narrative set in an alternate reality where the U.S. lost World War II.
In response, Epic confirmed that no creative intention connected the emote to the Peacemaker storyline, but to mitigate any confusion, they will change the choreography in an upcoming update. Players who bought the emote before its removal may return it without losing any refund tickets.
Ultimately, this decision appears to be a wise one for Epic Games, despite mixed responses on whether it was necessary, as eliminating potential misinterpretation could prevent significant issues down the line.
