Gamers Build ChatGPT in Minecraft, but Responses Take Hours

A unique creation in Minecraft takes considerable time to respond due to its complexity.

In an impressive feat, one gamer known as sammyuri has created a functional version of ChatGPT within Minecraft, creatively dubbed CraftGPT. This version has approximately 5 million parameters, limited by the capacity of the creator’s computer. The project is extensive, comprising 439 million blocks and demanding the use of the Distant Horizons mod to maintain operational performance.

Despite its novelty, CraftGPT is notably slow, with even optimized settings allowing it only to start responding after several hours. This highlights the intricate balance between creativity and practical limitations in such ambitious gaming projects.

As noted by sammyuri, the model struggles with producing coherent responses and often strays off-topic, promoting a cautious approach for those wishing to experiment with CraftGPT, as the creator mentions:

“You shouldn’t have high expectations. The model is very prone to going off topic, producing responses that are not grammatically correct, or simply outputting garbage.”

Moreover, the need for a high-performance Minecraft server for efficient operation indicates the increasing potential in merging programming with gaming creativity to explore new digital frontiers.
