Elon Musk Initiates $97.4 Billion Bid for OpenAI Amidst Social Tensions with Sam Altman

Elon Musk leads a group of investors proposing to acquire OpenAI for $97.4 billion, rekindling previous disputes with CEO Sam Altman.

A report from the Wall Street Journal reveals that a consortium led by Elon Musk has submitted a $97.4 billion offer to acquire OpenAI, the organization behind artificial intelligence innovations. Musk has expressed intentions to revert OpenAI to its foundational principles, emphasizing safety and open-source approaches.

This proposal re-ignites a year-long conflict between Musk and OpenAI, particularly with CEO Sam Altman. Musk previously initiated legal action against OpenAI, alleging shifts away from its original mission in favor of profit. In a related twist, OpenAI recently stated that Musk himself once pushed for a profit-driven structure in 2017.

Furthermore, in a recent tweet concerning Musk’s proposal, Altman commented, “No thank you but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.” Musk responded with a brief retort, labeling Altman a “swindler.” This ongoing feud illustrates the tension as Musk’s ambitions intersect with Altman’s leadership at OpenAI.
