Inkarnate, a widely used tool for creating maps in Dungeons and Dragons, is under scrutiny for its decision to allow AI art tools for products intended for its third-party marketplace. While Inkarnate itself won’t utilize generative AI, this policy change, among others, has sparked a boycott among the Dungeons and Dragons community.
When users seek to design specialized maps for their campaigns, many opt for Inkarnate due to its user-friendly interface and affordable subscription options. However, recent shifts in policy have drawn criticism. During a recent Q&A on the company’s Discord server, CEO Ingmar revealed plans to permit developers to use generative AI to produce assets for sale. Although these AI-generated contributions will be clearly marked, fans have expressed their disdain for the direction the company is taking.
On September 19, Inkarnate shocked users by abruptly increasing its subscription fees for new members but quickly retracted this decision after significant backlash. Adding fuel to the fire, shortly afterward, an advertisement featuring AI art circulated online, inciting further frustration within the community.
Faced with mounting pressure and negative feedback on various platforms, Inkarnate is contemplating a reevaluation of its policies regarding AI art in its marketplace. No final decisions have yet been made, leaving users eager for updates from the platform.
