Bully? Pulp it.
Despite being an innovative title back in 2006, Rockstar’s unique game, Bully, hasn’t seen a sequel, with the highly anticipated Bully 2 never coming to fruition. Its cancellation back in 2009 left fans disappointed.
As explained by Rockstar’s co-founder Dan Houser during a recent chat with IGN at LA Comic Con, the cancellation was primarily due to a lack of managerial capacity. He remarked that the creative leads at Rockstar were too limited in size, which prevented the team from pursuing all desired projects.
“I think it was just bandwidth issues,” Houser said. “You know, if you’ve got a small lead creative team and a small senior leadership crew, you just can’t do all the projects you want.”
The focus of Rockstar, particularly during the time when Bully 2 was shelved, was on significant titles like Max Payne 3 and Red Dead Redemption. The abilities that were developed for Bully 2, such as the innovative technology that allowed NPCs to remember player actions, eventually found their way into these later games. Despite his departure from the company in March 2020, Houser’s new venture, Absurd Ventures, is also facing similar challenges in balancing multiple projects with limited resources.
