Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser has confirmed that he did not take part in the writers’ room for Grand Theft Auto 6. Houser left the company more than five years ago, yet many fans speculated about his contributions to the game before his exit. Recently, he cleared up any confusion regarding his involvement.
Dan Houser
Houser has mostly stayed away from the spotlight since the late 1990s, allowing Rockstar’s products to do the talking. In rare comments, such as Sam’s announcement for trailer 1 of GTA 6, the Houser brothers have maintained a low profile. However, in February 2020, Dan left Rockstar, raising concerns among fans due to his significant past contributions to the franchise.
GTA 6 Lacks Dan Houser’s Touch
Concerns emerged about the narrative strength of GTA 6 in the absence of Houser. Notably, the game’s development predates his departure, leading many to believe he might have contributed to its writing. This assumption was recently dismissed by Houser during a live interview with IGN. He pointed out that he had penned the last 10 or 11 titles in the series, stating, “The world has probably had enough GTA from me. They’re always a new story. GTA 6 is not going to be a story I wrote or a character set that I developed, but I believe it’s going to be exciting.”
“I wrote the last 10 or 11 [GTA games]. I think the world’s probably had enough GTA from me. They’re always a new story. [GTA 6 is] not going to be a story I wrote or a character set that I developed, but I think it’s going to be exciting. The game will be great, I’m sure.”
Although Houser acknowledged it would be “strange” to navigate a new GTA installment without knowing its story, he is confident in the game’s potential. The trailers released so far suggest that GTA 6 will continue the tradition of exceptional storytelling within the series. Furthermore, Houser explained why Bully 2 never materialized, citing Rockstar’s extensive focus on major projects like GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption.
GTA 6 is set to launch on May 26, 2026, and it remains to be seen how the game’s narrative holds up without Houser’s input. He is currently leading various projects at Absurd Ventures, the multimedia company he established in 2021, which recently secured a publishing agreement for a new AAA sci-fi action-adventure game.
